Use of intra-articular viscosupplementation has increased dramatically in
recent years. Associated complications have been
reported1-10.
Complications associated specifically with Hylan G-F 20, commercially
available as Synvisc (Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals, Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania), have included both transient and, rarely, prolonged
inflammatory
reactions3,10.
We report an unusual complication of intra-articular injection of Hylan G-F
20: the formation of a soft-tissue mass that was initially diagnosed as a
sarcoma by expert pathologists. The patient consented to the publication of
the details of the case and helped confirm their accuracy.

Histopathologic slides of tissue obtained with an excisional biopsy of a
soft-tissue mass were sent to the musculoskeletal pathologist at our
institution from a community hospital. The accompanying clinical history
documented an expanding painful mass, of two months' duration, in the
posterolateral aspect of the left knee of a thirty-six-year-old woman with
