To The Editor:
We enjoyed the article on "The Hemispherical Harris-Galante Acetabular
Cup, Inserted without Cement. The Results of an Eight to Eleven-Year
Follow-up of One Hundred and Sixty-Eight Hips (81-A: 219-224, Feb.
1999), by Petersen et al. We wondered, however, whether the conclusion
of an aseptic loosening rate of 1 percent (four of 324 hips) is
valid as the study group included only 168 hips. The remaining hips were
not subjected to the same degree of critical analysis as the study
group, although the medical records indicated that they had had
no technical problems or revisions. However, in the study group
itself, one hip with aseptic loosening on radiographic evaluation,
which was considered to have failed, had good clinical function and
hence was not revised. This proves the point that the final evaluation
