Aseptic Loosening of an Uncemented Acetabular Cup

We enjoyed the article on "The Hemispherical Harris-Galante Acetabular Cup, Inserted without Cement. The Results of an Eight to Eleven-Year Follow-up of One Hundred and Sixty-Eight Hips (81-A: 219-224, Feb. 1999), by Petersen et al. We wondered, however, whether the conclusion of an aseptic loosening rate of 1 percent (four of 324 hips) is valid as the study group included only 168 hips. The remaining hips were not subjected to the same degree of critical analysis as the study group, although the medical records indicated that they had had no technical problems or revisions. However, in the study group itself, one hip with aseptic loosening on radiographic evaluation, which was considered to have failed, had good clinical function and hence was not revised.
