Revision Spine Surgery. Edited by Joseph Y. Margulies, Max Aebi, and Jean-Pierre C. Farcy. St. Louis, Mosby, 1999. $199.00, 887 pp.

The topic of revision spine surgery is as difficult to address as that of the assessment and surgical management of patients who suffer from conditions related to failed spine surgery. However, this book's 116 authors from thirteen countries recognize this difficulty and strive to give the reader the benefit of their experience with challenging cases.

The first chapter, "Revisions: Outcome Studies," by Bolger and Fraser, is one of the most important in the book. The authors point out the deficiency in our knowledge concerning the efficacy of repeat spine surgery and emphasize the need for prospective studies to determine the impact of these procedures on patients' quality of life.
