This book was written for primary health-care providers who manage athletes on site, with the hope that these practitioners will "profit from reflecting on and then applying the material presented in the easy-to-read text." It is intended to provide "a practical induction into properly caring for the special athlete who competes at any level."

The phrase special athlete is not defined, and it is not clear if it refers to the amateur or the professional athlete or whether the athlete is a child or an adult.
