Bone et al. reported on their experiences in "Displaced Isolated Fractures of the Tibial Shaft Treated with Either a Cast or Intramedullary Nailing. An Outcome Analysis of Matched Pairs of Patients" (78-A: 13361341, Sept. 1997). In the Discussion section, however, they made it clear that the paper was a comparative study of intramedullary nailing and functional bracing of closed fractures of the tibial diaphysis.
The authors, although critical of functional bracing of tibial fractures, made frequent reference to several reports by my colleagues and me5,7 on the subject. On one occasion, they described one of our reports7 as "the best reported in the literature, to our knowledge." However, they added that our results have not been reproduced by others. It is very likely that such a statement will prompt readers to surmise that we were not honest in our reporting rather than to consider that the indications . . . [Full Text of this Article]
