Dr. An has admirably compiled an almost 800-page text on the principles and techniques of spine surgery. Although the book deals primarily with operative treatment, it also covers such topics as biomechanical principles, diagnosis, and nonoperative treatment. Dr. An has done an excellent job of editing chapters by fifty different authors, who have presented an impressive amount of information related to spinal disorders.
The text comprises six sections, each of which is divided into five to eight chapters. The book begins with an excellent anatomical review of the spine, by An, who uses diagrams and cryomicrotome sections to give the reader a thorough understanding of this complex structure. The intraoperative cryomicrotome sections are exceptional. A highlight of this section is the chapter on electrodiagnosis and intraoperative monitoring for disorders of the spinal cord and nerve roots.
