This is the text of a symposium conducted under the auspices of the European Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and under the leadership of the editors. Although some of the contributors are from the United States and Japan, most are from Europe, primarily France.

The book is dedicated exclusively to the rotator cuff, and the format is quite different from that of most texts. It is divided into three major categories: basic science, diagnostic imaging (which is beautifully done), and diagnosis and treatment. In addition, there is a short chapter on the principles of methodology for comparative clinical study.
