Fistula between the Hip and the Sigmoid Colon after Total Hip Arthroplasty. A Case Report*

    Introduction
 
Most early and late complications of total hip arthroplasty have been well described. Low anterior resection followed by adjuvant radiation therapy and chemotherapy is standard treatment for locally advanced rectosigmoid carcinoma. The development of an enterocutaneous fistula between the colon and the hip is a rare late complication of total hip arthroplasty1,8. We describe the case of a patient in whom a fistula developed between the sigmoid colon and the left hip after a left total hip arthroplasty and a low anterior resection followed by adjuvant radiation therapy and chemotherapy.


    Case Report
 
A seventy-eight-year-old man had a left total hip arthroplasty without cement for severe degenerative joint disease in November 1989. In January 1991, he had a low anterior resection for stage-B2 rectosigmoid adenocarcinoma, according to the classification of Dukes2.
