Reimplantation and Lengthening with Use of the Ilizarov Apparatus after a Traumatic Amputation of the Leg. A Case Report*

    Introduction
 
The mangled extremity severity score was developed as a guide for decision-making in the treatment of a severely traumatized lower extremity3. A score of 7 points or more has been retrospectively associated with an outcome of amputation3,4. Recent applications of techniques such as the Ilizarov method of limb-lengthening and microsurgery may alter the current use of the mangled extremity severity score for predicting the indications for amputation. I present the case of a patient who had traumatic amputation of a leg, with a mangled extremity severity score of 10 points. The limb was salvaged with a combination of microsurgical and Ilizarov techniques.
