Pseudomonas Vertebral Osteomyelitis in Heroin Addicts

REPORT OF FIVE CASES

GEORGE J. WIESSEMAN M.D.1, VIRCHEL E. WOOD M.D.1, and LARRY L. KROLL M.D.1

1 From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, Loma Linda University, and the Clinical Services of San Bernardino County General Hospital and Riverside General Hospital

In five known heroin addicts with proved primary Pseudomonas vertebral osteomyelitis, inoculation with the organism by unsterile injection was believed to have resulted in hematogenous spread of the infecting organism to the spine. Four patients were treated successfully with a combination of gentamicin and carbenicillin, and one, allergic to penicillin, was treated successfully with gentamicin alone.
