Primary Open Reduction of Congenital Dislocation of the Hip Using a Median Adductor Approach

ALBERT B. FERGUSON JR. M.D.1

1 From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburgh

Based on dissections of the hips of four stillborn infants and observations during open reductions, a procedure to release the tight iliopsoas tendon and capsule through a medial approach was developed and applied in thirty infants two weeks to two years old. After this procedure, easy reduction without compression or constriction of the femoral head and immobilization in a functional position was possible. All hips so treated and immobilized for four months postoperatively showed no evidence of any growth disturbance and rapidly regained a full range of motion.
