Heparin Osteoporosis

AN EXPERIMENTAL MODEL USING RATS

Rats injected subcutaneously with heparin daily for eight weeks (clotting time about twice normal for twelve hours daily) showed a decrease in breaking strength of the humerus of about 8 per cent, a decrease in the cross-sectional area of the humeral cortex of about 12.5 per cent and a decrease in the amount of bone collagen synthesis of about 20 per cent as compared with the controls.
