In forty-four patients in this series some osteoarthritis with osteophyte formation existed at the distal interphalangeal joint of a finger with a mucous cyst. Excision of the cyst and osteophyte resulted in recurrence in only one finger, whereas excision of just the cyst is usually followed by recurrence in 25 to 50 per cent of cases. Nearly always the cyst communicated with the interphalangeal joint.
