Tissue-Viability Assessment with the Doppler Ultrasonic Flowmeter in Acute Injuries of Extremities

DAVID D. SCHERR M.D., PH.D.1, EDGAR L. LICHTI PH.D.1, and KENNETH L. LAMBERT M.D.1

1 From the Division of Orthopedic Surgery and the Division of General Surgery, University of Missouri Medical Center, Columbia

Three cases are reported. Two were injuries to the hand, in which other indications of blood flow were absent but flowmeter data showed that it was adequate. These data allowed proper nerve and tendon suture to be accomplished, without vascular complications. A third case of injury to the calf presented flowmeter data which indicated arterial obstruction, cured by fascial release.
