Post-Traumatic Fistula Connecting Prepatellar Bursa with Knee Joint

REPORT OF A CASE

JOEL B. SMASON M.D.1

1 From the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Southern California Permanente Medical Group, Los Angeles

A case of post-traumatic fistula formation between the knee joint and prepatellar bursa is presented. This possibility should be considered in any case of recurrent noninfectious effusion following trauma involving the prepatellar bursa, particularly when there is no history of repeated direct trauma to the prepatellar area.

Arthrography readily distinguishes this entity from the more common prepatellar bursal effusion without knee joint communication.
