Femoral Trabecular Patterns and Bone Mineral Content

DONALD H. KRANENDONK M.D.1, JOHN M. JURIST PH.D.1, and HA GUN LEE M.D.1

1 From the Division of Orthopedic Surgery, University of Wisconsin Medical Center, Madison

Roentgenograms of seventy-three hips internally rotated 20 degrees in thirty-eight women who were at least forty-eight years old without rheumatoid arthritis were scored for the relative degree of osteoporosis according to criteria publislied by Singh and associates. Bone mineral content of the radial mid-shaft was measured in these women by 125I photon ahsorptiometric method developed by Cameron and associates.

No significant correlation was found between these two parameters either directly or after correction of the bone mineral data for the subjects.

We conclude that the trabecular scoring method as described by Singh and associates is of title or no help in establishing the diagnosis or severity of osteoporosis.
