Cat Scratch Fever—A Confusing Diagnosis for the Orthopaedic Surgeon

TWO CASE REPORTS AND A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

RICHARD S. LASKIN M.D.1 and AUSTIN D. POTEYZA M.D.1

1 From the Division of Orthopacdic Surgery, Nassau County Medical Center, East Meadow

Cat scratch fever is a common disease which usually presents as a unilateral soft-tissue mass in an otherwise healthy child or young adult. When the tentative diagnosis of an atypical form of soft-tissue sarcoma is entertained in this age group, this disease process must be included in the differential. A supply of the antigen, easily prepared and stored regionally, can prove to be a valuable adjunct in diagnosis.
