Legg-Perthes Disease

LONG-TERM FOLLOW-UP OF THIRTY-SIX PATIENTS

WALTER E. GOWER M.D.1 and RICHARD C. JOHNSTON M.D.1

1 From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Iowa, Iowa City

Thirty-six patients with Legg-Perthes disease were examined thirty to fortyeight years after the onset of symptoms. The average length of follow-up was 36.3 years. The typical patient had mild limp, minimum shortening, absent or mild hip pain, and minimum or no functional impairment with respect to his job and activities of daily living. Symptoms and functional impairment did not seem to increase with increasing age and length of follow-up.
