Intravenous Lidocaine Anesthesia for Upper Extremity Fractures and Dislocations

LELAND G. HAWKINS M.D.1, STEPHEN D. STOREY M.D.1, and GEORGE G. WELLS M.D.1

1 From the Department of Surgery, Division of Orthopedics, University of Colorado Medical School and Denver General Hospital, Denver

A series of eighty-three unselected cases of closed upper extremity fractures and dislocations is described in which intravenous lidocaine regional analgesia was obtained for reduction. In eighty-one of eighty-three patients the analgesia, as graded by physicians, was excellent. No complications were encountered. This has proved to be a safe, effective, and rapid technique for obtaining deep analgesia using material suitable for clinical and emergency facilities.
