Open Skin Grafting of War Wounds

WILLIAM J. POLLOCK M.D.1 and JAMES C. PARKES M.D.1

1 From the United States Naval Hospital, St. Albans

We have presented a treatment regimen for war wounds utilizing the open techique of skin grafting. The indications, preoperative preparation, operative technique, postoperative care, and results have been discussed. The authors believe that this method of treatment offers the following advantages over other techniques for skin grafting granulating wounds: greater, more consistent graft take, with decreased tendency to lose grafts due to confined infection and the accumulation of pus underneath the graft; simplicity of technique; decreased operating time; continuous monitoring of the progress of wound healing; and diminished morbidity and perhaps even mortality.
