Diabetes Mellitus Initially Presenting as Peripheral Neuropathy in the Upper Limb

ROBERT D. LEFFERT M.D.1

1 From the Department of orthopaedics, Hospital for Joint Diseases, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York

Eight patients, not previously known to be diabetic, were evaluated because of pain, paraesthesias and or paresis in the upper extremities.

The referring diagnoses included radiculitis, neuropathy of mechanical origin, and psychosomatic illness. By the combined use of clinical and electrodiagnostic examination, the eight patients were found to have peripheral neuropathy. They were identified as latent diabetics by abnormal glucose tolerance tests.
