M. K. GOEL M.B.B.S., M.S. (SURGERY), M. S. (ORTHOPAEDICS)1

1 From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, K.G. Medical College, Lucknow

The cases of fifteen patients in whom vertebral osteotomy was done for fixed flexion deformity of the spine have been reviewed. The technique, indications, complications, and results have been discussed. Eleven patients had spondylitis ankylopoietica and four ostoemalacia. Fourteen patients were between twenty and forty years of age. In all patients, osteotomy was done in the lumbar region at a single level. The correction of deformity obtained ranged from 25 to 60 degrees, with an average of 37 degrees. There were no postoperative deaths or any serious post-operative complications. The operation completely changed the personality and the outlook of the patient and enabled him to live an independent life.
