Neurilemomas of the Extremities

NEWTON B. WHITE M.D.1

1 From the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis

Thirty-two patients operated upon for forty-five histologically confirmed neurilemomas of the extremities had pain, tenderness, and paresthesias more frequently than had been reported by other investigators. Multiple neurilemomas were also frequent and occurred in six of the thirty-two patients studied. The hand was the site of ten of the forty-five tumors and the foot the site of four. The clinical and operative manifestations of these smooth, glistening, white encapsulated tumors suggest that the proper diagnosis should be made more often preoperatively. Neurilemomas are always benign lesions. Local removal is the only treatment indicated.
