Tibial Condylar Fractures

MASON HOHL M.D.1

1 Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery, University of California, Los Angeles, California

A review of tibial condylar fractures has been presented. The principles of treatment, the classification of fractures, and the factors responsible for permanent disability have been delineated. The role of soft-tissue injuries in the production of permanent disability has been discussed. Recommendations for the management of each fracture type are discussed.

It is concluded that effective treatment of tibial condylar fractures requires repair of the soft-tissue injuries and restoration of a smooth and stable articular surface. Early mobilization of the knee and late resumption of the weight-bearing are among the means of lessening permanent disability.
