Lipofibroma of the Median Nerve in the Palm

1. A rare tumor termed lipofibroma has been described, which characteristically occurs in the median nerve at the level of the transverse carpal ligament of the hand in early childhood.

2. Tumors reported in the British literature having a similar case history, histological appearance, and postoperative course have been mentioned. There is need for a commonly accepted name so that tumors having the above mentioned characteristics can be collected, classified, and followed. It is the author's opinion that the term lipofibroma fits the gross and microscopic description better than previously suggested terms.

3. The point was made that isolated tumors at the wrist are not a part of the disease originally described by Déjerine and Sottas.

4. It has been demonstrated that this fatty-like tumor has so far been successfully treated by division and partial resection of the transverse carpal ligament, nerve biopsy, and observation over a three-year period.
