A reliable technique for determining bone-mineral content in vivo from photon-beam-transmission measurements has been developed. The technique is accurate and reproducible at the 2 per cent level. The effects of soft tissue overlying the bone are accounted for. The technique has been used to observe bone-mineral-content changes of as little as 6 per cent over a six-month period.
