A search of the files of the Mayo Clinic for tumors and tumor-like lesions of the patella yielded only seven cases. Except for one malignant lymphoma, which was part of a disseminated process, all the lesions were benign. They included one each of the following: benign osteoblastoma, ancurysmal bone cyst, hemangioma, chondroma, lesion of hyperparathyroidism, and an unclassified benign giant-cell variant. These benign conditions may be easily overlooked as a cause of pain in the knee but respond well to relatively simple surgical therapy.
