Treatment of Comminuted Distal Tibial Fractures by Combined Dual-Pin Fixation and Limited Open Reduction

MAX SCHECK M.D.1

1 500 Spruce Street, San Francisco, California

1. A method of treating severely comminuted fractures of the distal end of the tibia by dual-pin fixation and limited open reductions has been described. The open reduction is done through a small skin incision and soft-tissue stripping is not necessary.

2. The method is indicated in multiple-fragment fractures of the distal tibial articular surface and distal portion of the shaft of the tibia when open reduction is not feasible and satisfactory reduction is not achieved by traction alone.

3. Satisfactory results were obtained in five comminuted articular fractures, even though at first glance there seemed to be little or no hope of preserving function of the ankle.
