Alkaptonuria, Ochronosis, and Low-Back Pain

A CASE REPORT

A case history is presented of a patient with known ochronosis, in whom an acute low-back syndrome developed with findings of a ruptured intervertebral disc. Limitation of low-back motion had been present for several years, but the acute syndrome was of only one month's duration. The acute symptoms were relieved by removal of the ruptured disc and had not recurred eighteen months after surgery.
