Ulnar-Tunnel Syndrome at the Wrist

A REPORT OF FOUR CASES OF ULNAR-NERVE COMPRESSION AT THE WRIST

Four cases of pressure neuritis of the ulnar nerve in the ulnar tunnel at the wrist have been presented. Ulnar-tunnel syndrome at the wrist is proposed as a name for this symptom complex.

The symptoms were mainly pain in the wrist with numbness, tingling, and prickling in the ring and little fingers. Motor signs and symptoms were present in only one of the four patients.

Compression of both median and ulnar nerves—a combined carpal-tunnel and ulnar-tunnel syndrome at the wrist—occurred in one patient.

In all four patients surgical division of the volar carpal ligament combined with removal of any abnormal tissue (ganglion, thrombo-angiitis of the ulnar vessel, and so forth) gave immediate relief of pain and tingling, but return of normal sensation and power was gradual.
