Ultrasonic Decalcification of Bone

AN EXPERIMENTAL AND CLINICAL STUDY

EMMET J. THORPE M.D.1, BRUCE B. BELLOMY M.D.1, and ROBERT F. SELLERS 1

1 From the University of Tennsesee and Fort Sanders Presbyterian Hospital, Knoxville, Tennessee

Ultrasound passed into an acid decalcifying medium considerably accelerates the speed of decalcification of bone-tissue blocks without histological damage as compared with control specimens. All of our bone specimens, representing a variety of pathological conditions as well as normal bone, were decalcified within twelve and a half hours.
