Protein Metabolism in Idiopathic Scoliosis

Using paper electrophoresis, we found before any treatment had been applied on the patient a consistent increase of alpha 1 globulin and of the total protein bound hexose in the sera of scoliotic patients. The increase of alpha 1 globulin fraction was accompanied by an increase of the glycoprotein in the fraction. It may be assumed that the change in the blood serum of scoliotic patients is a consequence of a disturbance in the metabolism of mucoproteins and in the synthesis of the osseomucins of the bone matrix. The resultant high concentration of glycoproteins in the serum raises the level of the alpha 1 globulin, of the total proteinbound hexose, and of the alpha 1 glycoprotein fraction of the serum.
