The Mechanical Behavior of Articular Cartilage Under Compressive Stress

Maria Eugenia Camosso 1 and Gastone Marotti 1

1 Institute of Human Anatomy, University of Bari, Bari

Samples taken from the proximal epiphyses of the metacarpal bone of cattle of various ages were submitted to compressive stress under increasing load until fracture occurred. The results indicate that joint cartilage shows a remarkable degree of plasticity, that the various structural zones of the cartilage (for example, tangential, transitional, and radial) play a different role in the response to stress, and that changes in mechanical behavior with age may be related to the chamiges of the fibrillar texture and cellular grouping that occur imi cartilage during its differentiation.
