Complete Acromionectomy in the Treatment of Chronic Tendinitis of the Shoulder

George Hammond M.D.1

1 Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Lahey Clinic, Boston

Subject to the limitations inherent in the small series of patients presented, the following conclusions concerning acromionectomy in the treatment of chronic tendinitis of the shoulder seem warranted.

Acromionectomy is a simple operation which is compatible with excellent shoulder function and leaves little cosmetic defect. It removes the friction upon the tendon lesion, brings about spontaneous absorption of any calcific deposit, and relieves the symptoms. Because of the high percentage of excellent and good results, this operation is recommended for the treatment of a small, carefully selected group of patients with chronic disabling tendinitis of the shoulder which has not responded to conservative treatment.
