Fractures and Dislocations of the Cervical Spine

Wayne L. Norton 1

1 Fitzsimons General Hospital, Denver, Colorado

Unstable injuries of the cervical spine can be successfully managed by prolonged skeletal traction, with recurrence of the instability in a reported 10 to 12 per cent of cases. In patients with unstable cervical-spine injuries without severe neurological injury, the treatment of choice is early internal fixation by wiring and posterior spine fusion. Twenty-five patients with unstable fractures, dislocations, and subluxations at various levels were treated by this method with excellent functional results and early return to military duty.

A concept of management of injuries of the cervical spine, which is simple and practical and which should yield consistently good results, is outlined.
