Congenital Absence of the Odontoid Process of the Axis

Report of a Case

Congenital anomalies leading to a defective unstable atlanto-axial joint are rare. The resultant joint instability appears to present less serious clinical problems than the anatomical possibility suggests. Other than prophylactic indications are necessary before surgical fusion of the joint is performed.
