1 Orthopaedic Section, Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington, D. C.
Syme amputations, done in two stages, can be accomplished in the presence of open wounds and infected draining extremities which otherwise would have been subjected to higher open amputations. Patients with a Syme stump have been fitted with a light but strong plastic prosthesis, and have developed excellent gait with stumps capable of bearing the entire body weight without pain.
