PARA-ARTICULAR CALCIFICATION AND OSSIFICATION FOLLOWING ACUTE ANTERIOR POLIOMYELITIS IN AN ADULT
JOSEPH A. FREIBERG M.D.1
1 Orthopaedic Division of the Department of Surgery of the College of Medicine, University of Cincinnati
1. A case of acute anterior poliomyelitis is reported in which para-articular calcification and ossification developed, involving the metacarpophalangeal, shoulder, and hip joints.
2. This para-articular process, of an extent previously unreported, is due to an extensive lesion of the central nervous system and is non-specific to the type of this lesion, whether it be traumatic or inflammatory.
3. It is suggested that early local peripheral vascular stimulation might. be beneficial in similar cases.
4. At the conclusion of the self-limited para-articular ossification surgical removal of the osseous masses re-established joint mobility.
