ACCESSORY SACRO-ILIAC ARTICULATIONS

Accessory sacro-iliac joints frequently develop posteriorly between the ilium and the sacrum.
Both deep and superficial types have been observed. The latter occur more frequently and develop between the posterior superior iliac spine and the posterior surface of the sacrum.
These movable diarthrodial joints may become arthritic and even ankylosed.
They seem to be compatible with symptoms of low-back pain and sciatica.
