OSTEOMALACIA
MARY S. SHERMAN M.D.1
1 Department of Surgery, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Chicago
1. Osteomalacia (adult rickets) is a condition in which bone matrix (osteoid tissue) is formed normally, but fails to calcify.
2. Although osteomalacia from simple lack of vitamin D is rare in this country, the condition is not an uncommon complication of various gastro-intestinal and kidney disorders.
3. The diagnosis may be made witin certainty by biopsy of bone, which will reveal abnormal amounts of osteoid tissue.
4. The term osteomalacia should be reserved to describe this condition and no other.
