MIGRATION OF A KIRSCHNER WIRE FROM THE SHOULDER REGION INTO THE LUNG

Report of Two Cases

Robert Mazet JR. 1

1 Surgical Service of the United States Naval Hospital, National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland

Two instances of the migration of a Kirschner wire from the shoulder region into the lung indicate the danger of the presence of an unanchored sharp-pointed foreign body in the tissues. It appears that if wires are employed for fixation, some form of nut or stop which will prevent migration of the wire is necessary, and that the wires should be subsequently removed.
