BONE BLOCK FOR PAINFUL HIPS

J. B. L'EPISCOPO M.D.

Seventeen patients have been operated upon for various painful lesions of the hip, characterized by arthritic joint deformity with consequent poor mechanical function of that joint.

The majority of the patients have been either partially or completely relieved of pain. Four cases are too recent to warrant a final report; one is a complete failure.

It is our opinion that the pain is relieved because the graft takes on some of the weight in walking, producing what we might call an accessory hip joint, or because the abduction is limited by the bone block and thus impingement of the capsule is prevented.
