CHANGES SIMULATING LEGG-PERTHES DISEASE (OSTEOCHONDRITIS DEFORMANS JUVENILIS) DUE TO JUVENILE MYXOEDEMA
Report of a Case
FULLER ALBRIGHT M.D.1

1. In the case of juvenile myxoedema reported, roentgenographic examination showed changes indistinguishable from Legg-Perthes disease. These changes promptly cleared up on thyroid medication.
2. From the literature, it is clear that lesions occur in the epiphyses of cretins, which are similar roentgenographically to those seen in Legg-Perthes disease. From the work of Looser, however, it appears that the pathology in the epiphyses in the two conditions is entirely different.
3. Hypothyroidism and, as suggested by Shelton and Cavanaugh, retarded bone age should be looked for in all cases of apparent Legg-Perthes disease.
