PATHOGENESIS OF CONGENITAL CLUB-FOOT (Pes Equinovarus)

An Anatomical Study

From a study of the literature it is evident that relatively few investigations have been made to determine the course of development of congenital club-foot. A lack of definite knowledge of the pathological conditions is probably responsible for our inadequate knowledge of the etiology, particularly the hereditary features of this deformity. Whatever observations have been made point to the probability of neuromuscular disturbances, in a certain number of cases. The evidence for a neurogenic basis of the origin of congenital club-foot consists of muscular imbalance of the foot, which seems to be closely associated with defects of the lower spine. Further investigations, both anatomical and physiological, are necessary before conclusions can be formed.
